Enhancing Reading Skills
While a high school student,
Jamie Lash took a reading skills course, and his reading speed and comprehension
improved so dramatically that his verbal SAT score shot up by 130 points.
As Director of Student Development at DBU, Jamie Lash invited a company to teach
a similar course on the DBU campus and observed that the students received that
same kind of dramatic benefit. He invited this company to teach the course
again the next semester, and the next, and the next. After sitting through
the course four times, Jamie Lash was eventually trained and licensed to teach
it himself.
He taught this course
almost 100 times during
the last seventeen
years.
In the summer of 2005 Jamie Lash started making the course available to the
public. Since then he has taught it in Arlington, Grapevine, Grand
Prairie, Flower Mound, Richardson, Pantego, San Antonio, and Fresno,
California.
People who take the course often make comments like, "This is amazing. Why
don't they teach this to everybody?"
A couple years ago someone asked
Jamie Lash if this course could be taught on the internet. He said, "No"
and explained several reasons why it wouldn't work. However, after that
conversation, he began to wonder if those obstacles could be overcome.
After consulting with programmers in two countries, all of these obstacles have
been overcome!
Jamie Lash is now designing his
own course. From his progress so far, he is convinced it will be even more
fun and more effective than the course he taught in years past. He will
field test it with several live groups, and then a video producer will create
teaching segments in high definition for use on the internet. The internet
course will be interactive. The computer system will read student scores
and select a video clip based on those scores, so each student will receive the
instruction and encouragement appropriate for their particular situation and
level of progress. Internet students will thus receive instruction that is
even more personalized than they could receive in a live course! The
internet course is a work in progress. It should be ready in about 18
months.

Quote from Jamie Lash:
“I grew up as an atheist and had no clue why I was alive. Entering into a
personal relationship with God is the one thing that has made my life worth
living. God has set me free from numerous forms of bondage and has given
me a life of meaning and fruitfulness. I am so grateful for what God has
done in my life and for how He has enabled me to be a blessing to others.
My mission is to help enrich the lives of others by showing God's kindness and
by sharing His life-giving words."
